Today, I woke at 3:00am at a trailhead in Keene Valley, NY ready to explore old growth forest in the Berkshires. I headed for the historic Mohawk Trail and searched for coordinates of some of the only remaining primeval forest in Massachusetts. Giant beech, sugar maple, ash and black cherry few in patches along a steep northeast slope. I saw striped maple, mountain maple, and hobblebush in the understory; and owl pellets and early American artifacts on the way out.

Old Growth Beech-Maple-Birch
On my way down from Cliff and Redfield mountains, I came across some stellar old growth red maple-sugar mable-beech-basswood forest. In fact, it’s the best example I’ve ever seen. Towering trees spaced far apart with downed nurse logs, standing dead wood, pit and mounds, and all the other fixings that make old growth what it is. The patch was right off trail between Marcy Dam and the Adirondack Loj. I’ve never seen such large red maple or basswood in a northern hardwood forest. The sweet birch I saw was so large and old that it’s bark was plate-like and form was straight as an arrow with gnarly branches. One of the smaller downed sugar maples was cut with a chainsaw as it lay across the trail, so I counted its rings to be around 350 years old. I estimate the sweet birch to be close to 500 years old. What a treat!
Cliff and Redfield
Hot damn, it’s mud season in the Adirondacks! Woke up too late to do the giant 32-mile, 5-peak day as planned. So I tackled just Cliff & Redfield for 18 miles and 4,602 elevation gain. I jogged the entire way in just over 7 hours. The foliage is waning, but the mud is waxing after the recent rains. My shoes are waterlogged and every bone in my body hurts, so it was a successful day. I’ll only have three peaks left to finish the northeast 115, thereby completing the Adirondack 46 in one season. Out of all the mountain ranges, this is by far the most grueling. The trails are not always well marked, summits are much farther on average, and the terrain is unforgiving! But I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Foggy Morning Paddle along the North Shore
This morning was in my sights for a long paddle from Menemsha around the Elizabeth Islands and back. The water stays warm into October, and late-summer typically produces a fair share of flat wind days like today. But when my alarm went off at 5am, I awoke to thick fog. My annual September paddle to the islands would have to wait until another day. Instead, I made the best of a beautiful morning and paddled from Menemsha to the old Brickyard and back (a four mile paddle). I put in at Menemsha Beach at 8:00am where a pair of elderly woman had just dove in; "We swim here every morning until about mid October!" I was treated to a pair of peregrine falcons on a cliff, schools of striped bass below, colorful foliage, and hordes of fishermen competing in the Martha's Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby. As they say, September is the best time to be on the Vineyard.

The Great Range Traverse







Kinley following cairns up the exposed alpine trail from little Haystack to Haystack with peaks we had already climbed in the background including Basin, which has a horn (or summit peak) facing away from the glacial direction. The exposed rock on Little Haystack and Haystack Mountains is unlike anything I've ever seen.

Anorthosite is a major type of rock found in the High peaks region (picturd left). It is very old (1 billion years old), scarce on earth, but common on the moon. Anorthosite is a hodgepodge of metamorphosed limestone from ancient pure oceans, shales and silts, and varied group of sedimentary rocks containing garnet, graphite and sillimanite. Anorthosite is a coarser-chrystalline intrusive igneous rock dominated by plagioclase feldspar - typically labradorite. Labradorite is interesting for the was its colors shimmer - an effect called "labradoresence" or the "Schiller" effect. When light catches it right, it looks like blue and green northern lights skittering across its surface, similar to moonstone,which is another type of feldspar found in the Adirondacks. Typically, I'm used to tripping over granite, schist and gneiss in the northeastern mountains - not moon rocks! The geology is just one magical aspect of the Adirondacks.


At last, we made it to Mt. Marcy where we were greeted with some alpine plants in bloom. Alpine tundra is much less common than other parts of the northeast. Alpine meadows and the plants that grow there are relics of the arctic tundra (or taiga) that once covered much of NY during last ice age. Today, the Adirondacks holds one of the southernmost distributions of taiga in North America; these habitats now cover only 85-acres on 20 of NY’s tallest mountains in Adirondacks. Alpine species and habitats are imperiled and protected. Most species grow close to the ground, reducing exposure to high winds. Their chemistry protects them from harmful UV rays, and helps them photosynthesize easier. Although it’s early for these plants, we did see some Lapland rosebay, Greenland stitchwort, and bilberry in bloom.

Finally, we made it to Mt. Marcy. Beautiful weather, close to sunset. But we knew we’d have a difficult slog down 10+ miles, much of which was hiked in the dark. Snow mono-rail trails, downed trees, river crossings and long periods of flat-ground hiking made for a long and exhausting trip back. Prior to this, Kinley had only hiked 9 peaks so it was incredible she did such a tough hike so well with only a few scrapes and bruises. We finished in 18 hours.
